Requirements

  • Minimum age for all drivers: 23. Drivers from 20 to 22 years of age (underage drivers) with two or more years of driving experience are accepted, subject to a daily surcharge of CLP 12,900 for each underage driver, and the insurance deductible is doubled. Underage drivers may only rent vehicles in the “Small” category. Underage drivers are not accepted for travel to Argentina.
  • A valid drivers license and passport for each driver. Tourists may drive with a license issued in their country of origin. An international permit is not necessary to drive in Chile. Resident aliens and Chilean citizens must present a license issued in Chile.
  • A major credit card in the name of the renter (MasterCard, Visa, Diners Club or American Express). At the time of vehicle pick-up, the credit card must have an available balance equivalent to the amount of the rental plus a guarantee* as explained below, and must be valid a minimum of 3 months after the rental termination date.

    Important: Please notify your bank before your trip to Chile to authorize the use of your credit card in our country. For security reasons, some banks block certain features of your card for international transactions. It is essential that your card be fully enabled at the time of vehicle pick-up, otherwise rental will not be possible.

  • Payment is due before the start of the rental. To facilitate the rental process, the guarantee and rental value will be retained up to 72 hours before the pick-up date.

*The guarantee is a retention on the credit card during the term of the rental contract (it is not a charge). The retention is released when the rental contract is closed in our office. Please keep in mind that the liberation of the guarantee can take from several days up to a month when the credit card is of foreign origin. The time it takes to complete this process depends on the issuing bank and the credit card processing company. If the retention is not liberated within a month, please contact your bank first. If the problem persists, you can contact our customer service department an we will do what we can to speed the process up.

If authorization for travel to Argentina is requested, the required guarantee increases to CLP 1,000,000 for Small vehicles, CLP 1,400,000 for Medium and CLP 1,800,000 for Large. Note: authorization for travel to Argentina is temporarily suspended.

Insurance

Standard Coverage (included) = CDW, DAT
Included in the rental and incorporates the following coverages.

CDW: Partial Collision Damage and Theft Waiver
This insurance covers collision damage and theft with a deductible per event within Chile, according to the following table:

In case of rollover, total loss, theft of the vehicle, or collision damage in Argentina, the amount of the deductible is doubled. Exclusions: windshields, windows, tyres, accessories, optional equipment, radios, damage under the vehicle, loss or breakage of keys, loss of documents or license plates are NOT covered by CDW.

DAT: Third Party Liability
This insurance covers third party liability and civil responsibility up to CLP 14,150,000 within Chile.

 

Assistance Coverage (optional) = CDW, DAT, Roadside Assistance (AR)
Adds Roadside Assistance to the Standard coverage.

Roadside Assistance
Covers emergency assistance 24×7 from Arica to Puerto Montt and towing service in Chile up to a maximum of CLP 200,000 (about 200 kms on highway). Conditions: 1) Coverage is restricted to official roads; 2) Vehicles that require towing must be returned to their location of origin.

If coverage has not been contracted, the cost of roadside assistance is as follows: CLP 40,000 flat fee for assistance, CLP 1,500 per kilometer if the vehicle requieres towing, plus any additional costs necessary to get the vehicle on the tow truck.

 

Plus Coverage (optional) = CDW, DAT, AR, RDD, SLP
Adds RDD and SLP to the Assistance coverage.

RDD: Reduction of CDW Deductible
Coverage that reduces the CDW deductible to CLP 350,000.

SLP: Supplementary Liability Protection
Coverage that increases third party liability limit from the standard CLP 14,150,000 to CLP 28,300,000.

 

Premium Coverage (optional) = CDW, DAT, AR, RDD+, SLP+
Adds RDD+ and SLP+ to the Plus coverage.

RDD+: Reduction of CDW Deductible Plus
Coverage that reduces the CDW deductible to CLP 250,000.

SLP+: Supplementary Liability Protection Plus
Coverage that increases third party liability limit from the standard CLP 14,150,000 to CLP 42,450,000.

 

Super Protection Coverage (optional) = CDW, DAT, AR+, SLP++, EDD, SACA
Adds EDD y SACA to the Premium Coverage, and increases the limits of roadside assistance and third party liability coverage.

EDD: Waiver of CDW Deductible
Coverage that waives the renter the responsibility of paying the CDW deductible.

SACA: Accessory Coverage
Covers loss or damage to the following accessories: windshields, windows, tyres, external mirrors, wheel covers, locks, antenna, security kit (extinguisher, jack, wheel wrench), windshield wipers and radio.

AR+: Roadside Assistance Max
Increases the limit of emergency towing service from CLP 200,000 to CLP 500,000.

SLP++: Supplementary Liability Protection Max
Coverage that increases third party liability limit from the standard CLP 14,150,000 to CLP 70,750,000.

Optional Coverage Conditions

  • Must be contracted prior to vehicle pick-up
  • Coverage is only applicable in Chile
  • Drivers below 23 years of age can contract the Assistance coverage only. The applicable guarantee and deductible will be double the normal.
  • Contracting the Plus, Premium or Super Protection coverage lowers the deductible but does not lower the guarantee required according to the size of the vehicle.

Insurance Exclusions

Insurance coverage will not apply in the following events or circumstances:

  • The driver is not in possession of a valid drivers license.
  • The driver is under the influence of alcohol or drugs that produce disinhibitory or hallucinogenic effects or drowsiness. Under Chilean law, a person is construed to be under the influence of alcohol if the concentration of alcohol is equal to, or greater than, 0.3 grams of alcohol per 1000 grams of blood at the time of the accident.
  • The driver flees from the scene of the accident.
  • The person driving has not been expressly authorized in the Rental Contract to drive the rental vehicle.
  • Damage caused by misuse, abuse or negligence.
  • Damage caused by overloading the vehicle.
  • Damage caused by the use of incorrect fuel.
  • Damage or loss of personal effects of the renter or passengers.
  • Damage to parts or components under the vehicle.
  • Damage caused by driving in water or on roads in poor condition or unfit for vehicular traffic, or when weather conditions do not permit safe transit.
  • Damage to the interior of the vehicle, cigarette burns, carpet or upholstery stains.
  • Loss or damage of ignition keys.
  • Loss of vehicle documents or license plates.
  • Damage to the vehicle or third-parties as a result of the commission of a crime, use in competition (wagers, challenges, races or contests) or damage caused by deliberate malicious acts committed by the driver or his passengers with the intention of causing such damage.
  • Failure to follow proper accident reporting procedures as informed at the time of vehicle pick-up.

General Conditions

No Smoking

All our vehicles are designated non-smoking. We request our customers to respect this disposition as a courtesy to fellow travelers. A fine of CLP 48,000 will be charged for smoking in our vehicles to cover the cost of cleaning.

Rates

Prices are subject to change without prior notice unless confirmed by a written reservation. All prices are in Chilean pesos (CLP). Any dollar amounts are approximate and will vary according to the rate of exchange at the time of payment.

The rates in each reservation or contract are calculated based on the original duration of the rental. As a general rule, longer contracts have lower daily rates. Therefore, in case of vehicle return in advance of the agreed drop-off date, to the actual days used, two days will be added as a charge for early return. If after this adjustment there is a balance in the customer’s favor, said amount will be refunded. Otherwise, no refund will be made. In any case, the total value of the rental will never be greater than the original amount.

Reservations made through channels external to United Rent a Car are not subject to refunds for early return.

Reservations made through agents in our call center or physical locations will be subject to a surcharge of 6% over the rates published in our website.

VEHICLE MAKES AND MODELS
The indicated makes and models are subject to availability at the time of pickup. Therefore, our company reserves the right to make substitutions for vehicles of similar characteristics, or of a superior category, without prior notice.

Payment Conditions

Payment is due before the start of the rental. To facilitate the rental process, the guarantee and rental value will be retained up to 72 hours before the pick-up date.

DEBIT CARDS/CASH
Neither debit cards nor cash are accepted for guarantee purposes, but may be used to pay for rental charges.

Cancellations

Reservations may be cancelled free of charge up to 24 hours before the scheduled pick-up date. Cancellations within 24 hours of scheduled pickup will incur a charge equivalent to one day’s rent at the daily rate of the vehicle category reserved. Reservations made less than 24 hours before vehicle pickup cannot be cancelled without cost. Payments for permits and insurance to travel to Argentina are not refundable.

NO-SHOW
Customers who do not show up at the scheduled pickup date and time of the reservation, will incur a charge equivalent to one day’s rent at the daily rate of the vehicle category reserved. As a courtesy, we will hold a vehicle for 1 hour after the original reservation pickup time, unless there is a wait list for the vehicle.

RENTAL EXTENSIONS
Any changes in date or time of return must be communicated at least 24 hours in advance. Rental extensions must be authorized at least 72 hours in advance. During high season, rental extension requests may be denied.

OVERDUE RETURN
There is an additional charge for vehicles returned after the date and time specified in the contract. Every extra hour will be charged at 0.25 times the daily rate. Every extra day will be subject to a surcharge of 20% of the applicable daily rate.

Fuel Charges

Fuel is not included in the rental price.

If the vehicle is returned with less fuel than that at the start of the rental, the difference will be charged at the average price per liter in gas stations near the location, plus a 35% refueling surcharge.

If you do not receive your rental vehicle with a full tank, return it full and we will credit you for each liter that exceeds the fuel level at pickup with a 20% premium over the price per liter. The price per liter will be calculated according to the average of the service stations near the pickup location. The fuel credit will be applied as a discount on your account. The discount amount for this concept cannot exceed the amount to be paid directly to United for the rental.

Additional Drivers

There is a charge of CLP 1,500 per day for each additional driver. Additional drivers must be at least 23 years old and present a valid drivers license and passport. In the “Small” vehicle categories additional drivers between 20 and 22 years of age and at least two years of driving experience (underage drivers) are accepted, subject to a fee of CLP 12,900 per day per underage driver. In the case of underage drivers the required guarantee and insurance deductible are doubled, and optional insurance is restricted to “Assistance” only. Underage drivers are not accepted for travel to Argentina. There is no limit to the number of additional drivers that may be authorized.

OFF-HOUR PICK-UP or DROP-OFF
Some locations have a key drop that allows after hour drop-off (see key drop locations here). Your rental contract will be closed at the time you arrive in the parking lot.

In Puerto Montt, key drop returns outside operating hours will have a cost for parking until the opening time of the following day, at CLP 2,400 per hour with a maximum of CLP 12,900. These amounts carry no surcharge with respect to what the airport charges us for parking.

Pick-up is possible only during the operating hours of each location.

There is an airport fee for pick-up at the Santiago (SCL) airport equivalent to 10% of total rental in all categories.

We have rental counters on the first floor in each of the passenger terminals, T1 (domestic) and T2 (international). Follow the “Rent a Car” signs after collecting your baggage.

One Way Rentals

It is possible to return cars to a different office than the originating office, subject to the charges specified in the table below (amounts are Chilean pesos and include sales tax)*:

Emergencies

To request assistance please call the telephone number specified in the Rental Contract. The limits of the assistance will depend on the coverage contracted.

If coverage has not been contracted, the cost of roadside assistance is as follows: CLP 30,000 flat fee for assistance, CLP 1,500 per kilometer if the vehicle requieres towing, plus any additional costs necessary to get the vehicle on the tow truck.

Urban Expressway Tolls (TAG)

Tolls for the use of urban expressways* (TAG or Televia) are not included in our prices and will, therefore, be charged in addition to rental fees according to actual usage, plus a 18% service charge.

The billing of toll charges based on actual usage can take place well after the end of the rental due to the delay in our reception of toll invoices.

*Urban Expressways: Costanera Norte, Acceso Vial AMB, Autopista Central Urbana, Vespucio Sur, Vespucio Norte Express and San Cristobal Tunnel.

Interurban Tolls

Tolls for use of expressways, roads, bridges or tunnels are not included in our prices. Interurban tolls that are charged to the rental vehicle’s TAG account are the renter’s responsibility and will be billed separately, plus a 18% service charge. Such charges may be made well after the end date of the rental due to the delay in our reception of toll invoices.

Parking Fees

Fees for use of parking facilities are not included in our prices. Charges for parking that are imputed to the rental vehicle’s TAG are entirely for the renter’s account and will be billed separately, plus a 18% service charge. Such charges may be made well after the end date of the rental due to the delay in our reception of parking invoices.

Fines for Traffic or Parking Violations

Fines for traffic or parking violations that occur during the rental term are the renter’s responsibility and will be billed apart from rental charges, plus an administration fee for each fine as follows:

  1. Fines in the city of Santiago: up to CLP 35,000
  2. Fines in principal cities out of Santiago: up to CLP 55,000
  3. Fines in places neither a. nor b.: up to CLP 79,000

The charges may be made well after the end date of the rental due to the delay in our reception of judicial notifications.

Vehicular Restriction

Vehicular restriction is a prohibition applied to cargo vehicles (trucks, pickups and cargo vans) to circulate on certain days of the week based on the last digit of the license plate, determined randomly, when the authorities declare an environmental pre-emergency (2 digits) or emergency (4 digits) in Santiago.

The restriction applies to the area inside the ring encircled by Americo Vespucio from 10:00 am to 6:00 pm. This disposition is applicable from May 1 to August 31 of each year.

The episodes of environmental pre-emergency and emergency are unforeseeable events of force majeure, as determined by the competent authorities. As such, the restriction is to be considered part of the traffic regulations that drivers must respect, and is beyond the responsibility of our company.

Fines for violations of the vehicular restriction are the renter’s responsibility and will be billed separately in addition to an administration fee of CLP 10,000 for each fine. Such charges may be made well after the end date of the rental due to the delay in our reception of judicial notifications.
